Today I learned a valuable lesson in my learning curve to ice fishing.

I left my ice tent at home today and spent 3 hours enduring -12 weather with the wind blowing. The kokanee fishing was good the first 2hrs and then the last hour it went dead which was the coldest hour of the morning.

I caught my first kokanee at 16ft after changing to a pink jig that the fellow next to me was using. After that I had numerous bites but no hook ups so I switched to the tries and true Mack’s glow hook.

Most kokanee were caught at 16ft and a one was caught at 25ft.

I also learned, to be careful using someone else’s hole who just left. He had 2 holes side by side and eventually they tunneled to one another under the surface. I lost one really nice kokanee that swam to the second hole and got off. Another kokanee managed to loop around the ice bridge between the 2 holes and popped off. Needless to say, I drilled a new hole, but then the kokanee bite magically turned off.

It took me 2 hours to warm up at home after fishing, but was well worth it.

I’m brining my ice tent next time.
