Finally had some time to get to the middle of this book while waiting for our winter tire change over on our vehicles. This book has made me question the use of colours while kokanee fishing.

Red or pink? This book has put into perspective that color may only contribute a portion of the much needed piece of the puzzle to catch a kokanee. It shines a light on the idea of contrast over color to help our presentation stand out in different water conditions. It even grades different colours and the way they interact with their environment.

On top of this, one must take into consideration the way colours are manufactured. Not all batches of lures are created equal, so we should consider their contrasting abilities. How are colours viewed from a vertical and horizontal distance? It is interesting to read that certain colours change with different distances. This color shift may contribute to a number of uninterested kokanee when they get close to our lure and are spooked by a sudden change of color.

It’s been a great read so far, I have half the book to go. Thought I would share this information with the group as our lakes are almost open here in Northern BC.

On a side note, we did very well last spring on chartreuse and black apexes for kokanee. Some of this success could be owed to their contrasting abilities. Although last year we did not keep a fishing journal, we are dusting off our fishing journal this year and will be tracking our steps through the year.

Red, pink, chartreuse or black? These options can be as complex or simple as you choose.
