We had a great weekend fishing spoons for Dragon Lake rainbows.
Saturday produced fish on multiple spoons like Gibbs Fishingkoho spoons, croc spoons and kitimat spoons. The top producer was a copper Gibbs koho spoon. We caught at least 25 fish and lost many more. The fishing has definitely been picking up even with warmer water temperatures which were hovering around 60 degrees. And, the fish seem to be fat footballs this year compared to last year, which is exciting to say the least.
The fog on Saturday was almost too thick to navigate in spots, but we made it to our starting location and were able to start moving around more comfortably as the fog lifted later in the morning.
The fish seemed to be schooling up more in some areas compared to others. When we found them, the fishing was amazing. Unfortunately, one fish swallowed the spoon too deeply and we had to bring it home. The colors on it were amazing. I’m guessing that it was one of the Horsefly strain of rainbows that have been recently stocked in the lake. What do you think? Naturally, we chose to explore the stomach contents and found numerous goldfish inside. One of the goldfish was larger than I’ve seen in the past. In fact, it resembled the approximate size of the copper Gibb koho spoon that I was using. Maybe this is why I have been having more success with the koho spoons last fall and this fall?
Sunday proved to be just as good fishing, except the weather was warmer and there was no fog to navigate through. For whatever reason, the fishing was spectacular in the morning and slowed down in the early afternoon. We caught so many fish that we lost count and estimated 30 to 40 fish to be a reasonable estimate. We had one huge rainbow break us off and took our koho spoon with him, which was the top producing spoon that morning. The next top producing spoon (Gibbs kitimat spoon) fell victim to a trout that moved just the right way for the line to be accidentally cut and then acrobatically tumbled out of the net while I was holding it and looking around at the scenery.
I look forward to working through some of the footage from this weekend and the last few weekends. If you haven’t subscribed to our YouTube channel or seen some of our content from fishing Dragon Lake, please subscribe and check out videos like this one (How to Fish Spoons for Trout) on our channel.
