Today I went kokanee fishing with a friend and we did fairly well hooking the fish, but had a hard time bringing them to the net.
We went straight to “my spot” from yesterday to see if we could find the same school of big kokanee I was getting into. We managed to put a few in the cooler right away and were marking active fish right away as well.
Then, after a couple lost fish, it was like someone flicked a switch and we found ourselves searching for an active school again. When we managed to find a school, we triggered a bite by slowly speeding up. I have never seen a kokanee roll for so long on the surface after unhooking itself. This kokanee rolled and flipped like no other. Then, as if in a dying last attempt in the 66 degree surface temperature to swim, it flipped on the surface and went belly up.
We decided to turn around and go check it out, but out of no where an eagle swooped down and picked up the fish and flew off. We couldn’t believe it! Where did this bird come from? We were not able to get the video camera on quick enough to film the eagle coming in, but it was a sight to see.
In the end, we managed to put 8 kokanee in the cooler and must have lost at least 10 kokanee. We used the same gear as I had on yesterday. The only difference was the fresh corn I made last night. I made some Garlic Bloody Tuna corn last night and the kokanee were going crazy for it.
Stay tuned, I’m excited to make the YouTube video from our trip. We had lots of action and lots of fun learning. I’m looking forward to some new video angles and seeing what footage we got of the eagle, if any.
