Another fun day of fishing for Dragon Lake was had today.
The wind was relentless, but with a good action plan to fish areas sheltered by the wind (most of the time), we were able to get into some of the bigger fish that have been hiding from us this fall. Unfortunately, we had two fish devour our spoons (we both had one bottle make it) and they came home with us to be consumed at a later date. I am starting to look into trying other types of hooks to see if I can reduce mortality rates to my goal of zero. I have tried barbless single hooks, and now barbless treble hooks. Last year, the barbless trebles seems to be working well and mortality was only two fish or three for the entire the season, but this year the number of fish is already at four. I’m finding the fish are hitting differently this year (or so it seems). The four that did not make it swallowed our spoon and I’m not sure if a single barbless hook would have produced better results. After an interesting conversation with another angler, I’m thinking about trying small circle hooks. Has anyone tried small circle hooks with spoons before?
